Gertrude - The Scamp Trailer

Welcome to The Adventuress (one of my friends called me that this week and I love it, so I’m stealing) blog posts about Gertrude my 1977 Scamp Trailer and my adventures in becoming a full time camp girly. If you don’t know what a Scamp trailer is, it is a brand of very small fiber glass trailers. My trailer from hitch to the very back bumper is 13 ft. At least 2-3 feet of that is the hitch and battery, so you can imagine the 10 or so feet inside is pretty small. If you follow me on social media you’ll see an annoying number of pictures and stories about how cute and tiny Gertrude is.

Gertrude? Why Gertrude?

Well my friends, I have been obsessing over the podcast The Magnus Archives. Per the website: The Magnus Archives is a weekly horror fiction anthology podcast examining what lurks in the archives of the Magnus Institute, an organisation dedicated to researching the esoteric and the weird. Go read about it: https://rustyquill.com/show/the-magnus-archives/

Anyway, this podcast is unsettling, supernatural, but also you fall in love with the cranky archivist and his assistants that love to cause mayhem for him. The podcasts slowly start to reveal more and more of the story and you get HOOKED. One of the side characters is named Gertrude. She is a badass, semi cranky, take no bullshit kind of lady. And that’s what I named my camper after.

For all three of you following this blog (hi Grandma), I decided to come up with topics I always hit so that way I actually write about my adventures and have a starting place to document. They are:

  1. What I listened to: (things that passed the time)

  2. What I read: (things that passed the time, probably at night because I shouldn’t listen to spooky podcasts in the woods while camping in Gertrude for my own mental health).

  3. You’re joking right: Things that went awry, because let’s be real it’s going to happen…frequently.

  4. Small wins: I don’t want to jinx anything BUT we have to celebrate the little things I learn along the way. And maybe you’ll learn something too!

  5. I deserve to be embarrassed by this: Things that feel obvious after the fact, that required me to smack my forehead and say ‘oh, duh.’ Look, if I can’t laugh about it I’ll just be mad about it so this is the outlet for that.

  6. Side quests: Breaks I took, things I saw, people I met up with, little adventures! Because that’s what Gertrude is all about right?

  7. Other notes: Random thoughts, poems, pictures of Moose or Poe, anything miscellaneous.

And hey, if you’re only here to laugh feel free to skip to ‘you’re joking right’ or if you want cute animal pics skip to ‘other notes.’ Read some or all of my adventures. I’m excited (scared) to come back a year from now and see how things want.

Wish me luck 🫡
